Licence Training LAPL(A)

Training meets FCL.100 and AMC1 FCL.110.A requirements: minimum 30 hours of flight training on an aeroplane or TMG motor glider, including 15 hours of dual instruction with an instructor and 6 hours of supervised solo flight (at least 3 hours of solo cross-country flying, of which one must be at least 150 km / 80 NM with a landing at an aerodrome other than the departure aerodrome).

Main topics of flight training

  • Flight preparation: mass and balance calculations, inspections, maintenance.
  • Basic flight operations: control by visual reference, critical speeds, stall (incipient and full) and recovery, spin, normal and crosswind flying.
  • Take-offs/landings: normal, short field, obstacle clearance.
  • Cross-country: visual, dead reckoning and radio navigation.
  • Emergency procedures: simulated equipment failure, radio communication at controlled aerodromes.

Licence Training PPL(A)

Training meets FCL.200 and AMC1 FCL.210.A requirements: minimum 45 hours of flight training on an aeroplane or TMG motor glider, including 25 hours of dual instruction with an instructor and 10 hours of supervised solo flight (at least 5 hours of solo cross-country flying, of which one must be at least 270 km / 150 NM with two landings at aerodromes other than the departure aerodrome).

Main topics of flight training

  • All LAPL(A) content plus:
  • Basic instrument flight: cross-checking instruments, instrument turns, radio navigation.
  • Cross-country: comprehensive navigation (visual, dead reckoning, radio), flight plans, low-level and reduced-visibility navigation.

Common to both training programmes

Before progressing to solo flights, the student must have studied the theory subjects aviation law, flight theory, aircraft general knowledge and radio communications. In addition, a progress check flight with a second instructor must be completed to verify that the student is ready for solo flight. A valid medical certificate is also required – we recommend obtaining it at the very start of training.

When the theory training and all flight hours are completed, we recommend you for the skills test, which you fly with an examiner in the aircraft you trained on. After passing the skills test, you have become a pilot! Once you have your licence, you can use the club's aircraft independently at the standard member rate.

The theory training is the same for both licence types. At Malmi Aviation Club, studying is done remotely in English at your own pace. The study application works on Windows, Mac, iPad and iPhone.

There are 9 subjects to study:

  • Air Law (010): Flight rules, ICAO, EASA regulations, licences, airspace, ATC.
  • Aircraft General Knowledge (020): Structures, systems, engines, instruments, maintenance.
  • Flight Performance and Planning (030): Performance, mass/balance, climb/descent, glide.
  • Flight Operations Procedures (040): Flight manoeuvres, emergency procedures, control.
  • Principles of Flight (050): Aerodynamics, wings, stall, turns.
  • Meteorology (060): Weather phenomena, clouds, wind, visibility.
  • Navigation (070): Map reading, dead reckoning, radio navigation.
  • Human Performance (080): Human factors, fatigue, hypoxia, medicine.
  • Radio Communications (090): Phraseology, procedures, emergency messages.

After distance learning, you still need to sit the Traficom examinations. The exams are computer-based multiple-choice tests. Traficom theory exam results are valid for 24 months, during which time the flight training must be completed.

LAPL(A) and PPL(A) licences differ not only in training but also in privileges, medical requirements and currency requirements. Our club's aircraft are of the SEP(land) category (Single Engine Piston) – a single piston-engine aircraft operating from land. A SEP(land) aircraft can have a maximum take-off weight of up to 5,700 kg. To fly our aircraft, you need a licence that authorises the operation of SEP(land) aeroplanes.

LAPL(A) (FCL.105.A)

  • Pilot-in-command of SEP(land), SEP(sea) or TMG aircraft with a max take-off weight ≤ 2,000 kg (our largest aircraft has a MTOW of 1,280 kg).
  • Max 3 passengers (total max 4 persons); passengers only after 10 hours PIC experience.
  • Night rating possible; no instrument rating or instructor privileges.
  • Can be upgraded to a PPL(A) licence.
  • No expiring rating – privileges maintained by recent experience: 12 hours, 12 take-offs and landings, and 1 hour refresher training flight in the preceding 2 years. Alternatively, a proficiency check with an examiner.
  • Medical certificate: LAPL class (longer validity for over-40s, slightly lower requirements).

PPL(A) (FCL.205.A)

  • Includes all LAPL(A) privileges plus broader privileges for non-commercial operations.
  • Enables instrument rating, instructor and examiner privileges.
  • Our training includes a SEP(land) class rating in the licence.
  • Extendable to other aircraft types (multi-engine, turbine).
  • ICAO licence – recognised outside the EU as well (e.g. USA with minimal paperwork).
  • SEP(land) class rating valid for 2 years; renewable by 12 h + 12 take-offs/landings + 1 h refresher in the preceding 12 months. Alternatively, a proficiency check with an examiner.
  • Requires a Class 2 medical certificate (valid 5–1 years depending on age).

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do training flights take place?

You schedule each flight with your instructor according to your own timetable. However, there are certain daily limits that cannot be exceeded in basic flight training.

The following limits apply, except for cross-country flights as the only task of the day:

  • Before the first solo flight: max 2 h/day
  • After the first solo flight: max 3 h/day

For solo cross-country flights:

  • As the only task of the day: max 4 h
  • Longer tasks are decided by the head of training

At least 12 h break between training sessions.

When do I need to pay for training?

Theory training must be paid for before it starts. For flight training, you pay as you fly.

What payment methods do you accept?

We send invoices by email. For flights, invoices are sent after the flights, approximately once a month. We currently do not accept card payments.
